Yeah , It's a Boat but Will it Float?

There’s a reason I’m not an engineer. I’m not smart enough to figure out how bumble bees fly or iron ships float. Some other people have apparently had problems with the latter conundrum lately as well.

The recent sinking of the Korean ferry, MV Sewol, with the tragic loss of the high school students has dominated the news. No one can seem to pinpoint the cause.

January before last, the Italian luxury cruise liner, Costa Concordia, ran aground off the coast of Tuscany, killing 11 people, supposedly because the captain had his girlfriend up on the bridge and was paying more attention to her than to the navigation of the ship. That was obviously a case of negligence.
